By Brian Nowicki Toledo wasn't supposed to win. Toledo hadn't played well on the road against a BCS opponent since 2002 at Minnesota. But this is a different team. With 5 minutes to play in the 4th quarter, the Rockets trailed Iowa State 23-15. Sophomore quarterback Clint Cochran led the Rockets down the field for a touchdown and 2-point conversion to tie the game with 3:28 left in the 4th quarter. The Rocket defense then stopped Iowa State, but Toledo could not score in the final minute and the game went to overtime. Toledo won the coin toss in overtime and decided to play defense. Iowa State scored first, but Toledo answered and tied the game at 30 going to a 2nd overtime. UT scored on a Clint Cochran TD run to take a 37-30 lead in double overtime. Iowa State came right back and tied it at 37 a piece to send it to triple overtime. Iowa State scored right away to make it 43-37. In triple overtime you have to go for two, so ISU did and converted for a 45-37 lead. Toledo came back and got a 2 yard TD run by Jalen Parmele to cut it to 45-43. Unfortunately the 2 point conversion attempt failed as Chris Hopkins dropped the ball in the end zone, giving Iowa State a 45-43 victory in triple overtime. Clint Cochran was 39 of 49 passing for 367 yards and three touchdowns with just one interception. Senior tight end Chris Hopkins led all receivers with 13 catches for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Steve Odom also had 9 receptions for 102 yards. In all, nine different receivers caught passes for the Rockets. Toledo had 412 yards in total offense, compared to 393 yards for Iowa State. Toledo had just 45 yards rushing, but 367 yards passing. Iowa State had 159 yards rushing and 234 yards passing. Toledo answered all the questions about whether or not they could replace guys like Bruce Gradkowski, Trinity Dawson, Anthony Jordan, David Thomas, Keon Jackson, and Anthony Jordan. No doubt this is a very good Toledo Rocket football team. Toledo opens the MAC season next Saturday night as they travel to Kalamazoo, MI to take on the Western Michigan Broncos.
