Kent State Pre Game Notes

October 10, 2006
By Brian Nowicki

The Rockets travel to Kent, Ohio this Saturday to take on the Kent State Golden Flashes. It will be the first meeting between the two schools since a 47-7 Rocket victory in 1999. Toledo comes into the game 0-2 in conference play with losses to Western Michigan and Central Michigan. Kent State is 3-0 in conference play and in first place in the MAC's East Division.

Last Saturday true freshman QB Aaron Opelt started his first game for the Rockets. He completed 31 of 52 passes for 288 yards and 3 touchdowns, but had 2 interceptions as well. One interception was not his fault though, and it was off of a receiver's hands and should have been caught. Opelt also ran the ball 20 times for 54 yards.

Gametime is scheduled for 4:00PM EST. The game will not be televised, but can be heard on WSPD AM1370 with Mark Beier doing the play-by-play, former UT quarterback AJ Sager as color analyst, and Brad Fanning on the sidelines. Pregame on WSPD begins at 4:00PM.

Kent State Game Comments

Coach Amstutz:

On QB situation - "Clint is ready. I consider him full-go now. But, we're starting the week with him number two and Aaron number one and we will have to see how it goes."

On RB Scooter McDougle - "He is working himself back into playing shape right now. We hope he can help us more and more each game."

On the team's progress - "We're a young team in progress. A work in progress."

On Kent State's success this year - "They have an outstanding coach, and a great coaching staff that are getting their players to believe. They are a real solid football team and a contender. Kent State is on fire right now."

On Kent State's defense - "They've built a solid defense in the last couple of years. They are solid against the run. Football's a game of confidence and they are playing off of momentum."

KSU Head Coach Doug Martin:

On UT QB Aaron Opelt - "I think they really found themselves a quarterback with Opelt. He really was impressive in this last game. He has a really strong arm and he's really mobile. He presents some problems that we haven't experienced here yet."

On UT Defensive Coordinator Tim Rose - "I coached with him at East Carolina. He was the defensive coordinator and I was the offensive coordinator. Every game is a one game season with him. What you saw against Central Michigan you won't see against us. He is very, very difficult to prepare for."
