By Brian Nowicki UT head coach Tom Amstutz has announced that Stan Clayton and Mark Rhea have been added to the Rockets coaching staff. Clayton will assume the offensive line coach position that Mike Devlin had previously held, while Rhea will take over as defensive line coach which was previously held by Randall McCray. Stan Clayton was the offensive line coordinator at Princeton for the last six seasons. As a player, Clayton was a member of Penn State's 1986 national championship team and he was a honorable mention All-American in 1987. He then spent six seasons in the NFL, playing for the Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots, and Pittsburgh Steelers. After life in the NFL, Clayton returned to Penn State as an assistant coach in 1995. He then spent the next two seasons with UMASS, and the following two seasons with Alabama State before moving on to Princeton. Clayton has also spent the last four summers as a coaching intern with the Chicago Bears. "Stanley Clayton is a former NFL player and outstanding coach at Princeton,” said Amstutz. “He was an offensive lineman at the highest level, so he brings that experience with him. He has a lot of energy and is very passionate about coaching.” Mark Rhea is a former Toledo Rocket defensive end. He was a four year starter from 1988 through 1991. In 1993 he was a graduate assistant on the Rockets coaching staff. He then spent the next two seasons as a graduate assistant at Michigan State. Then in 1996 he coached the defensive line for the US Coast Guard, before moving on to Austin Peay for the next three seasons. In 2000 he moved on to Idaho State, where he became the defensive line coach. He held that position until February of this year when he accepted a similar position at Kent State. When Randall McCray left the Toledo coaching staff last month, Rhea popped until Coach Amstutz' radar. “Mark Rhea is a former Rocket great who has worked his way up the coaching ladder,” said Amstutz. “We’re happy to have him back home. He brings enthusiasm and expertise at the defensive line position. Amstutz also announced that tight ends coach Chris Hedden will also take on the role of running game coordinator.
