Q&A with Quarterback Aaron Opelt
November 9, 2006
By Brian Nowicki

True Freshman quarterback Aaron Opelt was leading Fremont Ross' high school football team last year at this time. Now he is the starting quarterback for the University of Toledo Rockets football team. Playing time against McNeese State and Pittsburgh for the first time in college was all of the experience he had when he stepped onto the Glass Bowl turf for his first collegiate start in Toledo's Homecoming game against Central Michigan.

That was just a month ago, but it seems like a long time ago. The Rockets season has turned into a rebuilding year. Prior to the Akron game, Head Coach Tom Amstutz declared the 2006 season over and a new 4 game season called the "2006 1/2 season" had begun. The Rockets defeated Akron 35-20 and then beat Northern Illinois 17-13 to start out 2-0 in the "2006 1/2 season." QB Aaron Opelt has had a big hand in those two wins. At Northern Illinois he threw a touchdown pass and ran in another, the only two touchdowns the Rockets scored. I recently had the honor of talking to Mr Opelt, and the below Q & A is the result of that discussion.

Aaron Opelt Q & A

What has been the biggest adjustment to college life compared to high school?
Aaron - The biggest thing is that there is always something going on, whether it is class, homework, practice, or film study. Academics. You have to go to class and study hard.

What has been the biggest adjustment on the field between high school and college?
Aaron - It's faster out there and you always have to make adjustments.

What kind of things do you like to do when you are not on the football field?
Aaron - I'm not into sports. I like to go hunting and fishing.

You don't like sports? Outside of football?
Aaron - No, just football. I spend a lot of time on football and getting better.

What do you work on by yourself when the coaches are not around?
Aaron - I study film a lot..

How would you grade yourself so far this year?
Aaron - There's always room to improve. I need to study film and work on my timing.

What attracted you to the University of Toledo when you were being recruited?
Aaron - The biggest draw was that it was close to home and my family could see me. I really liked the football tradition here too.

What's your favorite movie?
Aaron - Lucky Number Slevin.

What type of music do you like to listen to?
Aaron - Country.

Any particular country person or group?
Aaron - Not really. I listen to all country music.
