On the Recruiting Trail

January 19th, 2007
By Brian Nowicki

This is the time of year that Rocket football coaches are hitting the recruiting trail, gaining new committments and holding onto those that have already committed before. Looking around the Internet, Toledo currently has nine potential recruits that have publicly announced they will sign a national letter of intent to play football at the University of Toledo. Most likely there are other committments that have not made their decisions public though.

The latest public committment is from a quarterback from Easton, PA. DJ Lenehan (6-3, 190) is rated three stars by Scout.com's recruiting service and ranked the #51 quarterback prospect in the country. He passed for 3,057 yards and 32 touchdowns, with just 9 interceptions as a senior at Wilson Area High School in Easton. He threw for 7,765 yards and 71 touchdowns throughout his high school career.

Another highly regarded prospect that has publicly committed to Toledo is defensive end/outside linebacker Marlin Parker. Parker is from Harding High School in Warren, OH. The 6-2, 232 pounder is rated three stars by the Rivals.com recruiting service and ranked the #40 weakside defensive end prospect in the country. He reportedly had offers from Boston College, Indiana, Akron, and Eastern Michigan before committing to Toledo.

Wide receiver Tim Cortazzo (6-1, 185) is a speedster from Irwin, PA. He has been timed at 4.39 in the forty yard dash. He has been selected to play in the Big 33 All-Star Game, which pits Pennsylvania all-stars against Ohio all-stars. He visited Toledo for the big game against rival Bowling Green and said the atmosphere for that game was great.

Running back Tamawi McGhee (6-1, 190) is from Steubenville High School. He rushed for over 1,600 yards and helped Steubenville win their 2nd consecutive State Championship. He chose Toledo over an offer from Bowling Green. Fellow Steubenville teammate, Dreylon Pree, is a defensive end/outside linebacker commit for the Rockets as well.

Offensive lineman Kevin Kowalski is ranked the #28 center prospect in the country by Scout.com. He is from Nordonia High School in Macedonia, OH. He reportedly had offers from Bowling Green, Akron, Indiana, and Illinois before committing to Toledo.

Other publicly committed recruits are tight end Jerome Jones, linebacker Tyson Patrick, and offensive lineman Matt Bradbury. Tyson Patrick had a very good high school career at Trotwood-Madison High School in Trotwood, OH. He was named Conference Player of the Year as a senior and he had 115 tackles. As a junior he had 102 tackles.

As for the rest of the players that will likely make up the Rockets 2007 recruiting class, anybody's guess is as good as mine. Sometimes prospects never publicly say who they are committed to and you don't find out about them until they sign on the dotted line. The first day to sign a national letter of intent this year is February 7th. By mid-afternoon most of the recruits should have signed their LOI's and sent them into the Rocket coaches.

The work is not done at that point though. Rocket coaches will put together a stength and conditioning program that they will send to all signed recruits so that they can prepare themselves for football at the University of Toledo. At the same time, Rocket coaches will be out calling on prospects for the next recruiting class and getting ready for spring football practices.
