By Mike Sopher I knew the Central Michigan game was going to be Toledo’s toughest test. And it proved that I was correct. Even though Toledo had the better talent and depth on both sides of the ball, Central Michigan won because they wanted it more. They believed they could win and they proved it on the field. Toledo does not have that killer instinct that previously no one would question. It’s time for several of these guys to do some soul searching by Friday night. Or this season could virtually be over for the Rockets. As I observed on Fox Sports Ohio, this team continues to struggle in certain areas. Receivers drop too many balls. The offensive line is not getting a good push at the line of scrimmage. Bruce does not have a go-to receiver like he did last year with Lance Moore, and, so, is often trying to make the perfect pass each play. The only bright spot is the continual strong play of our defense. Yes, we give up some yards, but this is the heart and soul of the team. Toledo would not be 6-2 without this much improved, Rose coached, defense. They get after the ball and make plays. They show a lot of heart. They are the rock of Rocket football. Maybe the offense should take some notes? Fans are complaining about the play calling and rightfully so. But the real problem lies with the term execution. Or should I say lack of execution. This team does not execute consistently on the offensive side of the ball and will constantly struggle against mediocre and good defenses unless drastic improvement is made by the players. Blame John Shannon all you want, but the real fault starts with the guys who wear the midnight blue and gold. This offense has the capability of scoring thirty to forty points a game and can do so with proper execution. Please don’t throw in the towel just yet on this team. The season is not over by any means. A Central Michigan loss to Northern Illinois or Western Michigan puts the Rockets back into first place in the MAC West. All Toledo has to do is basically win out. That won’t be easy, but it is certainly possible. Look, this team has played generally well throughout the season, and can still return to Ford Field in December for the MAC title and a bowl game. They just need to get it done this Friday against Ohio. I think they will. Prediction: Toledo: 30 Ohio University: 21 Have a question or comment for Mike? Email |
