Can Toledo Salvage its Season?

November 08, 2006
By Mike Sopher

Random thoughts and questions from last nights game:

• Big win in a disappointing season. Finishing 6-6 is not only likely but should be expected given Ball State and Bowling Green as our last two opponents this year in the Glass Bowl.

• Has Shannon finally understood the strength of this team? I thought the play-calling was more consistent and overall more effective than any previous game this season. This is a running team because of its lack of experience at the quarterback position and the overall ineffectiveness of the receiving corps. We have some talented lineman who have starting experience and with two backs averaging over five yards a carry, so why not run the ball?

• The reverse to Stephen Williams and the bootleg by Opelt for the second touchdown were two examples of great play calling last night.

• How much confidence does the Toledo staff have in Opelt’s young arm?

• Opelt still holds on to the ball too long but that will improve with time. With the bulk of the play calling on the ground, I thought Opelt did a decent job. He still has a lot to work on but is slowly showing signs of improvement.

• How does a 300 lb lineman take down a punt returner in the open field?

• With that being said, will we ever see Cochran again this season?

• Does Amstutz gamble too much on 4th down or does he have little faith in a freshman kicker?

• I think our new “unofficial” slogan has changed from “run the ball” to “kick the ball.”

• Why do certain corners play 10-15 yards off the ball? Is that by design or personal choice? It irritates me to no end…

• Was Garrett Wolfe hurt that much or did our defensive line get that much push at the line of scrimmage?

• Our linebacking corps was solid all night long. Stephen Morrison finally showed us his potential.

• Greg Hay has been impressive all season long and reminds me of a Sid Daniels or Corey Morris.

• The youth on this defense is starting to show signs of great potential. Archie Donald, Keith Forestal and Eric Heller can be legit run stoppers up the middle.

• The announcers were hilarious during the heavy fog moments but I get the impression that Craig James doesn’t take these MAC games all that seriously.

• The signs of a great Toledo defense are creeping back into the Glass City. Will the offense take notice?

• Will we as fans consider a 6-6 record a success given the 2-6 start?

• How bad will attendance be next Tuesday against a disappointing Ball State team?

• I was very happy with the win last night and I think this team will find a way to salvage this season.
