A Great Bowl Experience
December 28, 2005
By Mike Sopher

Observations from the GMAC Bowl:

The 30-hour roundtrip ride in the Jambulance went quicker than expected. Of course, it didn’t hurt that we had numerous DVD’s to pass the time.

Mobileans were very hospitable to Rocket fans and many thanked us for making the long drive down to watch our team. I know I speak for many Toledo fans in saying thanks to Mobile for being very generous and friendly to all of us who traveled down to the game.

There were probably close to 50,000 people that lined the streets for the parade. To be able to wave the Rocket flag while walking the route was truly amazing. Between the Jambulance crew, Blue Crew, and the Rocket Marching Band, Mobileans knew which team was in town for the game. Rocket pride could be sensed everywhere and only those who were there could really feel it.

By the way, we had to dodge horse manure and dead squirrels as we threw out beads to the people. I know many of us had a misstep here and there.

The downtown bars in Mobile definitely had customers wearing blue and gold. I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

The pep rally afterwards was fun as both teams held separate rallies outside with the band and cheerleaders present. Of course Toledo was a little louder, but in all fairness to UTEP, Toledo had a few more people present.

On a side note, the fireworks presentation by the GMAC bowl executives started a fire across from where the pep rallies were held. I heard a few bars burned down from the blast. I don’t believe anyone was hurt, but it was the first time I saw something burn because of fireworks.

The cleaning staff at the Hampton Inn knocked on my door at least 5 times each morning to clean. I thought that was rude and impolite but I guess they wanted us out early. And no, the hotel did not provide "Do not disturb" signs.

The folks at Ladd-Peebles Stadium charged the Jambulance $50 to put up a tent for tailgating. Fifty dollars for a tent? That is ludicrous! But we paid it anyway.

Probably close to a hundred Rocket fans tailgated or stopped by the Jambulance to chat with fellow Rocket fans. A couple Mobile and even one Toledo news team interviewed the owner of the Jambulance, (Pat Ryan, aka RangerRocket) as well as several other Rocket fans. The grill was fired up, the beer flowed freely, and everyone talked about Toledo. The reception from those walking or driving past was one of awe and appreciation for the diehard fans that braved the drive down to root for their team.

My game thoughts were posted yesterday, but I would like to comment on the attendance. I have heard estimates of between 2,000 to nearly 10,000 Rocket fans in Mobile. Honestly, it felt like we had closer to 2,000, but I can understand if we drew closer to 10,000 because Toledo fans were present at all corners of the stadium. Either way, the ones present left a tremendous mark on Mobile, and the folks down there probably thought we were the best MAC team to ever invade the city.

The scoreboard operator had a rough night as the scoreboard worked for only a small portion of the first half. It was a bit rough on the fans, but it obviously did not affect the players, at least the ones from Toledo.

The 200 or so students who made the trip down in busses were loud in the endzone seats. With thundersticks banging loudly, I’m sure people watching the game at home heard these Rocket fans. In fact, Toledo made a lot of noise in that stadium last Wednesday night.

Some cops made it a bit rough on Toledo fans after the game. Though several hundred Rocket fans made it on the field, several cops prevented others from doing so. It was frustrating to say the least.

No one expected 45-13, but in all honestly I was not surprised by the outcome. After seeing this team walk off the bus and into the stadium, I knew they were going to play a special game. This team was focused.

The argument during the trip focused around which bowl was better. Unlike a certain writer for a certain newspaper, I will not degrade the Motor City Bowl, which has provided many great opportunities for Toledo. However, Mobile puts on a better show for its guests. Between the parade and the general atmosphere, my pick would lean towards the GMAC Bowl, and I know many Rocket fans would agree with me.

All together, this bowl game experience was incredible and I honestly hope it grows in popularity. Whichever MAC team returns next season (and I hope its Toledo) will indeed endure a once in a lifetime opportunity.
