Q&A with Offensive Line Coach Stan Clayton
April 01, 2006
By Brian Nowicki

I recently had the opportunity to talk to University of Toledo Rockets Offensive Line coach Stan Clayton. Coach Clayton is in his first year at Toledo. He spent the last six seasons as the offensive line coach at Princeton, where he was very successful. Below is a series of questions and answers from when I meant with Coach Clayton.

What was your first impression of the coaching staff at Toledo?

Coach Clayton - A great bunch of guys that are hard working.

Did you know Coach Amstutz before getting the offensive line coach position here at Toledo?

Coach Clayton - I knew of him. He's a great coach and he's done extremely well. I did not know him personally, but I met him just in passing years and years ago.

Did Princeton run a similar type of offense to the one Toledo runs?

Coach Clayton - A very similar, zone type scheme. The protections are a little bit different, but for the most part it is very similar.

When you come into a new job like this, what kind of transition do you have?

Coach Clayton - I have some experience with making those quick transitions. Although at first it may have seem a little overwhelming, I was able to quickly adapt and merge myself into the offense and Toledo football. Right now I am in a position to help them win a championship.

What are your thoughts on the depth of the offensive line?

Coach Clayton - We have a lot of depth. I think they are a great bunch of guys to work with and I think they are hard working.

What are you looking for from the offensive line in the spring?

Coach Clayton - I want to see them improve on their techniques. I want to see them improve on making good decisions and assignments. And most importantly, I want them to play with passion, be physical, and dominate at all times.

Are there any players that have impressed you so far, either on or off the field?

Coach Clayton - I'm impressed with all of them. I think they are a great bunch of guys and they're all hard working.

Have you had any time to review the film and information on the new offensive line recruits coming in?

Coach Clayton - I'm in the process of doing that currently. I've had a chance to meet a couple of them. The ones I have met, I am very pleased with their personality and character, and I am sure they will be a welcomed addition to the team.

Do you have any hobbies that you like to do in your spare time?

Coach Clayton - FOOTBALL! Football is my hobby.

Do you have a family?

Coach Clayton - Yes, my wife and I. We will be relocating to Toledo.

Do you have any aspirations of coaching in the NFL or becoming a head coach in college?

Coach Clayton - The thing I am concerned about right now is being the best offensive line coach I can be for the University of Toledo. I'll let that take care of itself.
